Breaking Generational Curses

Spoke with a student...she is the first generation to go to college...she has her ups and downs....but she is determined to be the first in her family to graduate from college...I give her motivation when she has her downs...but no matter what it is all her!!!!!!!!!!!

Sandra,

There are some students who inspire us.

As a first generation college graduate myself I can relate to the HABES concept well. For me it took moving away from home to help break the negatives that surrounded me, including parents who didn't want to fill out financial forms to help me get funding. I know it can be done, maybe not that drastically, maybe more drastically for some.

I also had my vision, her name is Christy!

So many students are tied to their phones partly/mostly because their family and friends refuse to accept that they're trying to change their life. Many people in their personal life seem to do all they can to prevent it. That can be one of the biggest monitoring issues in my classes. The career field my students are going into forbids personal phones on their person while on the job. Part of my job is to not only educate them in the field but to help them cope with their previous beliefs, family expectations, etc. compared to the realities of their chosen profession.

I intend to help them prepare for what their employers will expect by telling them as well as limiting their phone times to breaks. They keep their phones but are allowed to have them on vibrate only, no texting, unless they notify me in advance that they may receive a call. Then they have to excuse themselves and leave the room to take it.

Dee,

This post should be useful to others who take this course. Thanks for sharing this insight.

In addition to positive reinforcement, providing students with a concrete game plan for accomplishing their goals is beneficial.

David,

How do you involve students in the building of the "concrete game plan?"
