Retention is very important!!!!
Maintaing students is a challenge in a carrer college as many students are dealing with the pressures of work, and family, and finances, along with school work. I've seen eserva good students have to drop out because they just could not make it all work, especially in an accleerated academic environment. "Would welcome any suggestion on how to help them make it through to graduation.
I agree! It can be very challenging to get students to stay engaged! This require a lot of time. I call students are the time to make sure they know that I'm here to support their efforts in passing the class.

I am really struggling with retention. I work at a proprieatary vocational school, and the students have such tumultuous family lives. Their home lives really interfere with school attendance. Although I try various methods of engagement, it is becoming increasingly difficult to retai them. Jeanette, James and Julne.....................your postings were very helpful.
It is hard to retain students if you can't even get them to come to class.

My school has a system whereby each instructor must maintain a log of students they have called. If a student is absent for two (2) consecutive days, that instructor must call the student to find out the reason for being absent. In this way, retension problems are kept to a minimun.
Monitoring students retention is one way to proved to ourselves the success for being an instructors. Providing good instructional material, being prepared all the time, making the classroom very interisting and alive , helps motivates the students to come to school and providing them 100% educational support and guidance through out his entire period of his school carreer.
Daily phone calls to the absent student are mandatory at my workplace. Management feels this practice will help with retention and demonstrate to the student that the school system cares about their education.
