I just completed the course, "ED106:  Enhancing Student Learning."  The most valuable thing I learned was how to properly address students that have learning disabilities, and how to encourage them to be successful.  I can actually apply many of the concepts discussed in this course.  For example, I will work on going to my peers for help whenever I am in a situation of monitoring students that I think I will have trouble handling myself.  This is a big deal for me, because I can be bad about asking others for help; I always try to work through it on… >>>

I found a lot of useful information in this course about soft skills.  Soft skills are a vital coponent that should be a part of all instructors' personalities.  However, the topic within the course that I was most interested in was "Managing Emotions" under the heading about Emotional Intelligence.  I tend to get very sensitive and frustrated about  some things--especially interpersonal communication.  So I would have liked to see more advice about this topic.  Better yet--I think an online course about Emotional Intelligence by itself would be very helpful.  Not just for me, but for a lot of people that… >>>

Managing emotions is a fine art that very few people have mastered. I am asking for advice on the following: Let's say you sit in an area at the office where you are surrounded by many employees because of lack of space. When I first started teaching, a supervisor told me this theory that I could present to the students. "Think of me as your employer and your grade is your paycheck." By setting clear expectations, guidelines, and policies, the students will develop the understanding that everything they do is a reflection of how they will be once they get out in the workplace. If a student's goal is to get an A, they will only earn it if they communicate well, study appropriately, and communicate any concerns they have along the way in a professional manner.
