In my experience, having extra credit projects readily available for students to voluntarily complete is motivating and keeps them focused on class content.
Bernadette,
I always have to weigh the benefit of work associated special assignments beyond the required work against the performance on overall performance. I like the idea of a student wanting to do more to apply or demonstrate their knowledge, but I'm not in favor of giving points for extra credit when regular assignments have been missed.
