New Ways Of Thinking

Hi-

In my classroom, my biggest goal is to help students discover different ways of thinking. To bring them to a new understanding of the world and to help them realize something they hadn't before. I think that many times people are not as successful as they could be, because they are never challenged to think outside of their "box." What is your challenge to your students?

Hi Bobbi:
I think all students come to us with degree of bias, assumptions, preconceived notions, conclusions - all which may be grounded in truth and accuracy or not. We want to be able to steer them in the direction that each one, in their own way is able to take the correct foundation we give them, and continue that pathway in future learning and life lessons.

The biggest challenge for me is having a range of ages 18-73 in a class. The learning curve is extreme and you always have to be aware of adjusting your teaching styles to each group.

Hi Shannon:
Your point is a good one. In one sense, we have to "take them where we find them", and the diversity in learning style, prior knowledge, maturity, approach to learning, and determination, these are among many factors that provide opportunities for teachers to be creative.

Individualizing instruction, creating relationships and a connection with each student, and identifying how we can best help students learn - that's one way to reach the range of folks you're dealing with. Also, we should be thinking about facilitating instruction, as much as providing it. In this way, the uniqueness each student brings can be enhanced as they become engaged in the course work.
