Absolutely. I do my own PowerPoints to keep it more suited for my students. I also try to make them more sequential.

we show them some videos, games and quiz taken on computer.

During my course I use PowerPoint presentations primarily to teach the chapter key points. From there I use videos and websites to expand on or show my students a different way of looking at the same information. For example, exercises in action instead of still shots or muscles within the human body not just a still shot.

Brian,

I also use an online forum to conduct discussions "outside of class". Interestingly, many students that do not verbally participate in class, frequently provide posts in the online format. Providing "in class" and forum discussions, can maximize the amount of student participation in the course.

I use a forum that is open to my students that I use to present information, questions, or suggestions for the class. The students love it and i find them running to the computer lab everyday after class to see what I have posted.

When students can use web sites of English departments for their questions, they may feel more resources available for their independents work in my course.

I believe that the resources of our textbook publisher are very helpful. I use the web site attached to the textbook for trying to assess how my students are doing in comparison to other students from other schools.

Demonstrating use of applications available in the hospitals for documenting, acquiring and understanding the existing policies, helps to motivate students.

I agree! There are so many useful ways to "show" how things can be done. YouTube and the integration of overhead projection has been a tremendous addition to our lab classes.

Kimberly,

In addition, publishing companies usually offer online instructor resources that can be used in tandem with the textbook lessons. In most cases, the students are provided with access to the online content, with their purchase of the book.

I'll have to check this out. Thanks for listing it! I also use online sources that allow students to make or use existing flashcards.

I currently integrate technology in my medical coding class by requiring students to look up codes online with coding software system. They seem to enjoy the interaction with the computer.

We teach Preservation Carpentry at my school. The students learn all the techniques of how things were built 200+ years ago using hand tools, but we also teach modern building practices using not only hand tools, but new modern power equipment that helps make the job go easier. However there some tasks that are students prefer using old hand tools instead of modern tools.

In my lab skills class I utilize a microscope projector to identify cells, parasites, etc. and incorporate this into my lecture. I find the students are engaged and it overall helps them with identification. In addition, I utilize an on-line course with excellent pictures of crystals, blood cells, and bacteria for my urinalysis lesson. This incorporates another delivery method instead of a standard PowerPoint lecture. Again, this helps keep the students engaged and excited about the material being presented.

Playing games using the computer. using the computer to take a test or quiz. Having student word process assignments and create powerpoint slides

Susan,

What innovative instructional tools are used in the interim (while you await your technology upgrades) to enhance the learning experience for your students? Also, do you find that the students are "frustrated" due to the lack of available technology at your instituion?

Tremayne Simpson

I would implement technology but where I'm located it's either unavailable or more difficult to acquire the instruments to use it.
Although in saying that they are upgrading the classrooms and including a mounted TV to use with the computer.
So, I'm sure I will make good use of technology once all is in place.

Rudayna,

Great methods for integrating technology. Whenever possible, I feel that it is important to make topical lectures interactive. I also project images onto the dry erase board and invite the students to "label" or input information. In my experience, students are always enthused when they are invited to write on the dry erase board.

I try to integrate technology in all my classes. I have them do Power Point presentations for one assignment and I use the projector to project images onto the whiteboard so they can label them.

Some innovative ways that I integrate technology into my course include the following: Utilizing the computer lab, researching on websites related to the content areas, and using electronic materials provided by the book publishers.
