High Risk Students
I come from a background which involved teaching high risk students. I hope to use what I have learned over the years to help motivate my students and encourage them to take advantage of the opportunities they have. Being in the technology field, it will be hard teaching such a diverse curriculum to the depth of knowledge that will be needed for students to be successful.
Richard,
I know your background of working with high risk learners will be valuable to you and your students. Good teaching is good teaching and working with high risk learners helps in refining the teaching strategies that are most effective. I have worked with high risk learners for many years and can appreciate the skills you have acquired as a result of your time spent with them.

I too, have many high risk students in my program. I have found that if I show an interest in their studies, more than just putting a grade on their exam, they want to do well for ME in addition t doing well for themselves. I keep a very good, but very professional, rapport with my students and people often tell me they are amazed at what my students will do for my classes and the effort they put forth, without being asked.
Tracy,
This is so important in working with high risk learners. They need to know that someone cares about their success and is there for them. You are providing this form of support through your professional interaction with them.

I go into every new class assuming that all the students are going to be high risk students. That way you are pleasantly surprised when the number of high rish students is particularly low for that term. All the students are high risk until you can assess their abilities.
Richard,
Good way to think about your instructional planning approach. This way you have ample resources and strategies ready so you can meet the individual learning needs of all your students.

I think in this modern age of advanced technology it's more dangerous and tricky because students are now looking up stuff from the internet regardless of their sources and they believe that's the correct and most accurate information than what their teacher is teaching them and that to me defines the "high risk students"and that will be a great challenge for most of us who are trying to teach for the first time, any suggestions?thanks
Stephen,
When students present me with such information I ask them to source it as well as be able to defend it in relation to what I am teaching them. My point is to push them to be accurate in their information if they are going to say their information is more accurate than what I am presenting. This generally stops their questioning because they find that what I am teaching is accurate and is the accepted content for the field. This increases their respect for me and my professional approach to sharing information with them.

I do the same for my students and it seems to work well.
I to have had some high risk students and have found that showing them support and encouragement will definetly get through to some but not all. No matter how hard you try, some students just cant get it together. But with that being said, i still never give up on them.
Dennis,
Good strategy to have in working with such students. This way you know what you have done all you can do to help them be successful. It is up to them to step forward and generate some success on their part. Keep up the good work and continue to impact lives.
