No Ctrl Z for First Impressions

There is no control Z "undo" when it comes to first impressions. You must gain the students' trust within the first 20 minutes of the first class or you will find yourself trying to gain ground for the rest of the term.

I couldn't agree more that you cannot undo a poor first impression. I think the time leading up to the start of class is just as important - for the students to see that you are friendly, happy to be there, and aproachable. Then the introduction will verify what they have already seen.

Hi Jennifer,
Great point. The feeling that students get when they first enter the classroom or lab is very important. You really hit the key points with your statements about being friendly, happy and approachable.

I like that! There is no Ctrl Z for much of life, but we have become accustomed to easily "undoing" things. First impressions cannot be undone!
