Using Different Styles
Personally I enjoy using powerpoints, dry erase board, hand-outs, and any materials for the subject that the studen t could put their hands on. I also employ pics and videos to try and hit all learning styles. My classes have been very responsive.
I agree! In math I always use the dry erase boards and manipulatives for teachers counting.

The comment is interesting but noticed little is mentioned about the hands-on learner. Teaching politics over the years I discovered students in engineering often struggle or get frustated with the course because so little in hands-on. Flow charts and schematics such as government organizationsl structures help but not for the more abstract ideas that require intensive reading followed by some form of discussion and writing project. Any ideas?
Hi Debbie, Thanks for your post to the forum. I have no background with engineering! Might it be possible to assign a hands on project? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Debbie,
An idea I use in my law and ethics class is a mock trial, evne old trials. Assign each person a role.
Depends on the subject matter.

I am a hands on learner. I have found that teaching in different styles helps me to pick up information easier. Its hard to teach from outside your comfort zone beacuse you aren't sure if you are teaching that "style" correctly. All I can do is try and take in what works and what doesnt and adjust as needed for different students.
Hi Mandy, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that it is probably not possible to address all the learning styles all of the time. But, if we make the effort we are doing a good job. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I have enjoyed the different styles, they have very helpful throughout my instructions with all my students.
I've always found success with songs and rhymes to help students memorize. I teach medical terms mainly and these can be very strange to students so any little audio helps increase retention.
Hi Lauren, Thanks for your post to the forum. Do you make up the songs etc. yourself or is there a resource for them? Best wishes for continued sucess in yourteaching career. Susan

I use some that I've learned throughout my own education and some that I make up. The majority of them came from when I was taking boards, the review I took use a bunch of them since we were being tested over so much.
I teach in a program in which success is based on the students learning to perform highly shilled tasks.
We do a lot of hands on training. They also need to have a broad knowledge base. I try to use several types of media,as well as interactive discussions to
fulfill these needs
