The Mutant Class

I recently had a class the other instructors referred to as the Mutant Class. They had a reputation for being disruptive and disrespectful. I found that as soon as ground rules were set, they understood my expectations and realized I was not basing my opinion on what others had said, and that I was treating them all fairly they responded. the so called Mutant Class quickly developed into one of the best cohorts in the school.

Michael,
I love hearing stories like this because it they reinforce the fact that if students know what the expectations are and are let by a dedicated and professional learning leader they will respond and learn. Thank you for sharing it with us. You have helped to shape the future of a cohort group that will always remember their successes in your class.

I understand your plight and have experienced this as well. Did you find that the students also respected the other members of the faculty and staff when you set the standard for acceptable behavior?

Was that the only change? Did you split up disruptive students or something else?

I agree that by setting the ground rules out from the get go, and being consistent in following them, and letting the students know what my expectations are upfront. My students will want to get with the business of learning, and leave the disruptions aside.
