Staff must have a caring attitude in order to have successful students. Staff must understand that student do have outside lives and must be good listeners in order to connect with the students and offer the correct amount of help.

When advising students we must consider what approach will have a better outcome. Student's personal and life situation might impact how they respond to an advisement. Personally, I will consider approaching each student as an individual and understanding that that there is nor specific recipe that applies to all students.
Listening to students and effectivelly communicating with them is essential to find out the needs of the students. By understanding their needs develop goals and plan of actions to ensure students success. Therefore, Advising students and ensuring good communication at the same time will esure increase in students retention.
Academic advising should be done by individuals who have the knowledge and skills necessary to work with students on life goals, school goals, and time management. This will allow them to better serve students via developmental theory.
When advising students we must take in a lot of factors. School policy, financial aid effects, students backrounds etc. Listening to the students short and long term goals

Developmental advising takes every student as an individual. The faculty is guided by the school's policies yet there is customization and choices provided.
Advising students is possible when we know more about them and where they want to go. Not always an easy task but by being inquisitive to the students needs one can find out a lot of information. this information can be used to help the student but always under the caution of not being a professional advisor and that they should seek assistance before making big decisions.
Developing long term goals with a student requires an understanding of their life situation and desires.
Reply to Lisa Herrera's post: Lisa I'm with you on this one. But this is also a skill that must be mastered by the instructor. Coaching and course correcting can be a challenge. We as educators do not want to come across bullies. Choosing our words, tone of voice and body language are all part of a proper coaching and course correcting.
Flexibility with students advising is ideal. Sometimes the communication process during advising can be easy or very difficult! A multi-level approach will assist in most situations that require advising as there usually more than one answer/solution.
