When a Student Isn't Attending

how soon should you report them?

Have you reached out to the student to assess why he/she isn't attending? Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances. I had a student that was not coming to class. After speaking with the student, it was discovered that there was a significant family illness sidetracking this student from attending class and succeeding academically.
Resouces were reviewed with the student to help him/her handle the family situation and return to school.

Hello,

Since we are at a carrier school that is on clock hours, I have made it a point for all my instructors to have a conversation with a student once he/she has missed 8 hours (2 days) of class. This gives us an opportunity to maybe intervene if in the case the student has some major obstacles coming to class. I train my faculty to be able to filter a conversation not so much solve the problems. We also have tons of other resources/departments that they can refer the student to.

We contact the student after the first absence if they are no call no show. We try to determine the reason for the absence as well as go over the attendance policy and help them understand the importance of doing the make-up assignments.

We do that as well. We reinterate the importance of attendance, and the policies covering make up work, and it's impact on their grade.
