The Arrival of Tablets | Origin: ED127

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Tablets as Teaching Tools --> Arrival of Tablets

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

In this module, technology options were addressed and discussed. The module provided a good overview of tablets vs. laptops. Putting students first is a priority and setting clear rules and expectations are an important aspect of using technology in the classroom.  I believe technology options can vary greatly depending on the district or business in which they are being used.  I intend to have a technology plan devised and implement it with my students.

Tablets instead of textbooks, we are going there quickly.

Consider students needs when selecting tablets.

I learned some good information about how to select a good quality tablet.

Tablets can be a great learning resource for many, but still many prefer to use a laptop.

I have the same struggles as students do with tablets verses computers; size and activity. Most prefer pc over tablets so far.

Comment on James Baker's post: In my opinion, tablet is a fantastic tool for both accessing and preserving knowledge.

Tablets can be beneficial in teaching settings.

Tablets can be effective as a teaching tool as long as they're used correctly.

I believe it is a great tool for accessing information as well as storing knowledge  I also believe a laptop can be just as effective

Tablets can be an effective classroom teaching tool if used correctly and not as a novelty.

tablets change with time.

I use an ipad currently along with an apple TV which allows me to walk around cordlessly. I am aware that tech will change but this might be a consideration for others when making a decision.

Training students & Respiratory Therapists to operate different models of ventilators could be much more easily done with tablet-loaded scenarios & simulations & much cheaper than acquiring multiple actual ventilators to train on.

Tablets without effective classroom management becomes an entertainment device.

Laptops have a better ease of use with a build-in-keboard than a tablet. We have so many screens at NoVa there really isn't a need for a tablet unless you need access to questions or notes at the same time you are teaching, which isn't effective in terms of deliverly anyway.

Of my students using electronic devices, all used laptops.

Definitely need to think through my intentions for use in order to research the best practices.  This will include knowing apps I wish you to use.  Practicing using them myself so I am familiar with them and fully understand the benefit they will offer to my students' instruction.    I am not going to just take suggestions, read up on good tablets and or apps.  I will know what I need and the reasons why.  Then I will become comfortable/fluent in it through personal usage before I introduce it to my students.

Tablets are good to use in the classroom.
