hangman

playing hangman for medical term really helps the students remember

Beth, I agree this is a good idea.

What a good idea to plasy hangman for MT. I will try that. I like to do puzzles for their review.

Beth, I like this idea as well.

Michele Deck

I find it helps in many other course applications like pharmicology and Anatomy.

I agree; and it builds their spelling skills.

Beth,
I too have used hangman and my students seem to enjoy it. When learning generic & trade names for medications, any additional activities help with learning retention.

My students really enjoy hangman because it gets them engaged in learning terminology.

Connie, any way you can engage students is a win win for all. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Do you play this the same as "regular" hangman, except using medical terms? How many games do you usually play at one time?

Hi, Mary Ann,
Yes, we play this the same way as regular hangman, using the terms of our current chapter. Usually 5-6 rounds of the game are enough - however, with a large group, sometimes we play a few more rounds. It is always best to stop the game while they are still having fun. You can play it again with another chapter later in the term. Have fun.

...mabel...

Mary Ann, it depends on how much time you have and how quickly people guess the right answers. using 5 minutes at the end of a class makes a great review.

What a great ideal....I have a small class now and I want to try this for Final review!

Juanita, I'm glad that hangman will help your students review.

Michele Deck

I have my students do their required projects as chapter reviews before the final. Last semester one of my students did "Fangman" which was the review of Blood, Lymphatic and Immune Systems - she was very creative w/a Dracula theme. It was a great hit with her classmates. It got the class engaged in their review; and for prizes she gave out "blood drops" - red hot candies. Who says you can't learn to be creative from your students?

Mardi, some of the best teaching ideas I use came from students. We must learn from them, they are teachers to us also.

Michele Deck

it is a good idea and i will definately try it out too my next Medical Terminology class. it will help them remember the terms and the spelling too.

Asya, hang man is an involving strategy. Practice it first with family or friends before you try it with students so you are comfortable.

Michele Deck

you are right it is involving and practicing first is a good idea

Playing hang man for term is a great way to get all your student involved in the learning process. i have used hangman in all my class and i also give small prizes to the group who gets the most words correct.
