When replying to others, try and think of interesting questions you can ask them. This will help both you and the other person think (and learn!) about the subject you are discussing.
Eston, that is a good idea. It will definitely stimulate good conversation and also allow students who do not see each other to become acquainted.
Often I will use discussions as a way of looking ahead by first addressing the board and then ending with a question or statement that will cause the participant to look forward to a concept we will be discussing in the upcoming week.
When I reply to students, I first provide a greeting with their name. I open with something positive to say and then I will lead into my discussion. I often ask questions of playing the role of devil's advocate. I will ask a question to help students to see from a different point-of-view.
