Institutional Copyright Issues

Who are some of the stakeholders involved in proactive copyright policies and procedures on the institutional level?

The stakeholders that should be involved in proactive copyright policies include (higher education institutions, instructors, staff, students, and administrators). Thanks, Tom

Tom,
It would be so much better is everyone was involved including administrators!

Renee Shaffer

Some of the stakeholders involved in properly addressing copyright laws are the institution, the instructor, students, and the community at large. The community can be harmed by the institutions reputation should there be suit and publicity over the suit.

Robert,
Everyone needs to be involved, so correct.

Renee Shaffer

really anybody that works with content of any kind that might be suspect of acquiring copyright permission or approval of any kind. Top administrators responsible for content delivery, which could include Dean's chairs faculty and any administrators that touch content should be involved in a proactive copyright policy and work to follow those procedures and encourage others to follow them as well.

Everyone involved in the process of providing education to a student, except parents, who are financial stakeholders if they are supporting the student.

Stakeholders include the content providers, faculty, students and administrators.

The stakeholders at the institution would begin with leadership, move down to instructors, and then, trickle down to students. In short, all interested parties from the top down would be stakeholders in any copyright policies and procedures enacted by an educational institution. Of course, proactive policies give more room for collaboration, testing and proper implementation, so for all involved, a wait-and-see attitude should be avoided, and a proactive methodology is best.

Ginger,

Certainly like your idea of top down momentum for copyright procedures and policy making.

students, tenure and adjunct professors, student aid workers, librarians, and virtually anyone directly involved with the decision making process of how coyright issues should be handled within an institution.

The people in the front lines are the faculty. For the proactive approach, this involves everyone in the University, course development, compliance, legal team, etc.

Of course the instructors, students, and administrators, but also the advisory board members and employers as well. These individuals can assist with the development of policies and procedures, as well as instructional materials that are relevant to the field.

Melissa,
Good idea to include the institutional advisory board. They can be a real asset to the development of a policy and procedure checklist. I had not thought about the advisory board, but they bring so much more experience and knowledge to the discussion. Thank you.

I would involve the faculty, administration, and out board of directors. I must admit I had not thought about the advisory board until I read Melissa's statement, so now I will include them as well. Our board of directors does have people with experience with compliance issues and would be a real asset. The faculty need to be active in this since they are ultimately responsible for upholding the laws in their classrooms and educating the students of expected behaviors.
