Student Computer Compatiblity
I am interesting in learnng how much time other instructors spend dealing with student computer crashes and other system compatiblity issues.
Far too often I will get an e-mail from a student who is taking an online exam and that student will claim that the exam crashed.
It forces me to reset the exam often after a student has seen most of the questions.
How do others handle such situations?
Thanks,
@albanygrad86Hi Phil,
It depends. If students have more than one opportunity to take the exam, I just reset it. If they only have one shot at it, they must send a technical service request. Maybe this is an opportunity where technical services can work with you.
All students also have cell phones, you could also ask the student to take a screen shot and send it to you of any techical issues. Having different variations of the test could be an option, but make it clear how many chances they have to take it, regardless of the problem.
The school where I teach online selects Quiz questions from a pool or questions randomly for each occurence and use of the quiz. So when students get cut off or timed out, I give them the choice of accepting their grade from partially complete work or a reset. I do NOT reset if they have just used up the alloted time with no technical error. If the student says it was a technical error, it goes to tech support to determine IF there was a technical error or if they just timed out.
