Comment on Andrea Buls's post: I agree with you. As instructors, it gives us the opportunity to course correct if needed. We can also ask reinforcement questions to measure the understanding of the lesson.
Students have the ability to practice customer service applications online and according to Newman University (2020), 99.2% of employers think critical thinking skills are essential, but they feel that only 55.8% of program graduates are proficient that statistic is remarkable.
What really resonated with me...It is important for teachers not to make assumptions about their students in relation to their experience, background, preexisting knowledge, or skill level. I have learned it is important to treat everyone as they are learning a particular skill for the first time, it helps to correct bad habits and provides opportunities for students to demonstrate what they know and the skills they have learned. I agree that application of skills and in-context learning are so important to ensure comprehension has been established. It also helps to provide close to real-life situations as much as possible so they can demonstrate their knowledge and abilities.
Teaching integral skills is essential for any student and future professional. In the case of skilled trade students, there's often a mistaken belief that mastering practical skills is sufficient. This module made me reflect on the importance of other skills such as critical reasoning, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability.
I enjoyed the discussion about the holistic approach for skilled trades workers.
