Online paperwork and student/customer relationship building

Hello. I'm curious as with many of you I understand how critical it is to make the most of our work day and organize our time as efficiently as possible with the demands and pressures of working in Admissions. but how does everyone feels about saving time and paperwork when it comes to online registration versus building better customer/student relationship. Has it been harder to build and if so how has this affected referrals?

Helmi,
Face-to-face contact provides you the opportunity to have their attention. You are also able to read their nonverbals.

I t is alot simpler to review paperwork and build a relationship with a campus student as opposed to an on-line student. I have been on both sides of the spectrum. You really need to ensure that an on-line student is focused on what it is your covering. Their have been manay occasions when I have asked a student to turn the TV off in the background or maybe call them back and conduct the enrollment process at a better time becasue they have kids yelling in the background. On campus, they are soley focused on you and on-line you must ask them or make the assumption they really are but you never really know. Also, referral are easier face to face as many times we may not even ask in an on-line enviroment as their is so much to cover.

Diane,
It does! The anytime, anywhere philosophy is part of the new generation. Online does take self-management and not everyone us geared for that.

Marcus ,

By doing so, it gives a solid mix of communication. It also provides that personal connection which is often missing online.

Well, the trend for higher education seems to moving toward the online modality. Students who choose online may be more confident with their IT abilities and prefer the convenience of getting the information as efficiently and quickly as possible.

Of course it depends however I have always liked having a student complete select portions online followed up by a face to face where we finalize the process.

Rosaura, I truly like the relationship built with an on campus student, but in todays' world of technology you can better access a student because I feel that if they require/demand an online course its because they are aware of the flexibility of not having to travel/commute. These students I find are more about receiving the proper documentation as quick as possible to get school started. this is not taking away from on campus students at all, but both realms make you better at understanding the type of candidate your getting and you can be more informed on how to contact referrals because they are sometimes different from the prospect.

rosaura,
It really depends upon the student base that you are seeking through your market strategies. An online student is different than a student who attends classes on a ground campus.
