screening/interviewing prior to enrollment
I think it is very necessary to screen/interview student's prior to enrollment this will help with the drop percentage.
Judy,
Finding the right fit means not only for the student and the school but also the school and student. We need to look at the student as a graduate and overcome any challenges that may cause them to drop.

I agree. It is very inportant to sit down with prospect students and interview as to why they want to come to school into a particular course. It is important to know and understand not only thier goals and expectations but what they are going to do to accomplish the course. It also helps with the drops rates. You would not want to enroll a student that would not be able to accomplish the program and succeed.
I am 100% agree,at the time of the interview we need to know not only the prospect student goals and aspirations but how strong they feel to over come all the obstacols and accomplish the course. It is also important to make the student feel that as an advisor we are here to help during the all program, but they need to know that the decision is very personal and if they started they have to do everything posible to go all the way to the end because that the only way to be sucesesful.
Interviewing the student and having them tour the facility is very important so that the student can make a sound decesion if your institution is exactly what they are looking for. During the tour and interview you are able to go over each point of the school and this also gives the student the opportunity to ask questions.
Tiffany,
Tours often break the ice and bring everyone together. Seeing the school and experiencing what you have been discussing is important in the admissions process.

I very much enjoy the process of speaking to students before they apply. As I recruit very busy working professionals it is important to establish what they are looking for in a program and whether they have the right experience and qualifications. I also feel it gives me the opportunity to provide detailed information right at the beginning of the admissions process.
I agree with you. It is very important to find out what is the main objective of the student. That way is easier to advise him/her the best possible way to achieve their goals.
Catherine,
It is an exciting time and can be very useful in discovering more about the student. We need this time to get to know each other as student and school.

More often than not, in-person screening/interviewing will provide additional information about the student's capabilities and skills, especially when communication is vital to their potential career.
For certain programs, we want to make sure students are comfortable communicating using various methods (in-person, online, telephone) when it is an important part of the skills required to succeed in a job related to the curriculum.

michael,
We are trying to determine the right fit between the student, the school and the program they select. Strong interviewing skills are an aid in determining this important factor.
