Board Compliance Recommendations

What recommendations do you have for a new school owner when it comes to complying with the State Board's rules and regulations?

Educate yourself, learn, learn, network with other professionals/peers, and learn some more. Attend as many training seminars as you can find. Read the rules and regulations as trivial as they may seem. Reach out to your peers. There are many educators out there who have been in this field for a long time and would not mind sharing a nugget of wisdom or two. Do not isolate yourself in your own world, ie, school. Many of us share the same problems about students, about rules and regulations, and about the industry as a whole.
As far as complying to the rules and regulations, by all means, comply to the best of your abilities. They're not there as a guideline for you to interpret any way you choose. Follow as directed!

I would suggest that a new school owner spend some time carefully reviewing all of the items listed under Ohio Revised Code chapter 3332. Everything that you need to make the school a success is there if you read it. It was very helpful to me when we were trying to establish both admission requirements and to put together advertising materials. Also don't be afraid to ask questions of the Board, especially before you just do something that you are unsure about.

Lisa,

Great point. The Board is always willing to answer questions, so please don't hesitate to contact us.

In addition to that already stated, the New Director training offered by OACCS in Columbus gave me a good foundation to begin with. Then it is important to have a network of other Directors to call when question arise as they always will. Get to know your consultant as a good source of answers.

Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations. Hire good people. Have an ongoing training system in place for your staff. Hold other managers accountable for compliance in their departments and frequently spot check areas for state compliance to rules.

Read through the rules and regulations more than just once! After reading through them, LEARN them. Become totally familiar with them. It not only protects the students, but safeguards the school also.

New school owners should always make sure all the paperwork is in order. I found it helpful to call the Board when I had questions. Additionally, I would encourage an individual to start as soon as possible to avoid getting to a crunch mode where numerous mistakes can be made and information overlooked.

I agree with becoming familiar with the information, and always have contact numbers from the State Board. The staff are very helpful.

I would suggest that you review the rules and codes and ask questions as often as needed to gain clarification. Having a network of other directors to talk to is always helpful. Require that your management team members in specific areas like education, career services and admissions are very familiar with the rules of their departments.

I would recommend that a new school owner learn all of the rules and regulations that apply to their school prior to the purchase. Have a seminar for the staff to go over these regulations and provide a reference manual for all employees.

Learn the regulations, and then learn from the community of career college and the Board. Additionally, learn the spirit of the regulations - that is, what affect they are intended to have. Ultimately, the reason is simple: to serve the students who walk through or doors.

@jenngorman : @lmendenhall :It is true that we all share similar obsticles and it is important to know you are not alone.
