Want's to vs. Have to

Very interested topic, we have to know to convert the thing we have to do into want's to do. This any everything it will look easier and light.

Denise,

I tend to to think "want to versus have to" is one of the most important concepts in this course.

Jeffrey Schillinger

There are many ways to overcome negativity in our daily lives. The "want to" vs. "have to" is a great way to instantly lighten almost any "obligation". We often overlook the luxury of ability. This is one way to shift thinking so that we appreciate each day.

Andrea,

I think the "have to" versus "want to" is one of the most essential points of this course. Thanks for noticing!

Jeffrey Schillinger

my students have to come to class every open days but sometime they do not want to. they want to go out and have fun. I have to motivate them to want to come to class instead.

I agree, getting students over the fact that they have to come to class into the want to come to class will have a large impact on the students, the college, and the instructors. When the students want to be there they will be more open to learning new ideas and class may go more smoothly. Students will also be less likely to let outside factors affect their ability to remain in school and help improve/maintain retention rates as well.

Mitch

The want to's are more successful than the have to's, I try to stress how everything you do is important and having a good attitude and doing things with a good attitude makes you more attractive when interviewing comes.

I agree this is one of the most important concepts
no only in this course but also in all aspects of life. from my own experience I see that the students who are doing my course with a "want to" attitude ,always go the extra mile, do extra work, take items home to practice. They enjoy what they do and see it as not a chore but something they want to do, almost like a hobby. They are always my most succesful students.
In contrast students who are attending the course with a "have to" attitude, have to be constantly motivated, they come with lots of excuses as to why they have not done something, they even want to leave early and never go the extra mile without complaining, and it is true that even a couple of these students in the class can affect the tempo and attitude for the whole class.

I think as an educator I would like to see my students get over the have to come to school and replace with I enjoy class and want to come to school to further my education and reach goals that I have set in life.

I agree, I deliver this concept to my students by telling them that they will be more succesful if the want to get to work instead of having to go to a job.

Yes, I would agree. I get to go to class now is what I hope to hear from the students. All of the points given in the course should help me get the message out that we pick how we feel about school. The teacher can help them understand the positive thoughts that create the feeling of want to.

I want the students and faculty to have this attitude. But that means we've got to do our parts in being the kinds of instructors and co-workers they "want to" be around.

Jacob,

Nice post. What are some of the HABEs of teachers students want to be around?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I agree this is most important in life. They find success in what they do and feel good about what they want.

Many times is just understanding that what have to be done it's for everybodys benefit.

Juan,

Can you please give some examples of what you are referencing here?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I feel that many of the students tend to lose track of the want to. They fall into the routine of I have to go to school, and they forget that they chose to come to school because of the want to have a career in an industry they enjoy.

Matthew,

"Have to" is much less effective that "want to."

Jeffrey Schillinger

I agree. The moment we feel we have to do something we tense up and push back. It seems an affront to our personal dignity.

People need to understand that they really do not have to do anything except die. Everything else is optional with one crucial caveat. We can do as we please but we must accept the consequences of our choices. If we don't wish to live in poverty then we must do something about it. For most people this means getting an education. So, if the ultimate goal is to get the education then we need to do certain things, not because we have to, but rather because we want to. Making this decision changes everything and is infinitely empowering. Instead of feeling drained and helpless, we feel energized and enthusiastic.

Having the students "want to" have to obtain whatever it is that they are seeking educationally is important. However, the staff, instructionally and administratively, my make sure that the student staff on task so that they can continue to "want" to complete their selected training.
