I observed an instructor last term and I saw the disadvantage of an instructor who was concerned about being a "Buddy" to the students. One student actually screamed at the instructor and the behavior was never addressed. After, I was given my own classes to teach and I chose to handle my class differently; rules and regulations clearly stated during the first class session, syllabus discussed; consequences for late work, tardiness, interruption of lecture, and disrespectful behaviors well also discussed. The learning environment turned out to be one conducive to promote learning of students with different learning styles and promote… >>>

As a K-12 educator with over 17 years of classroom experience before entering higher educaiton, I want to offer the view that classroom managment techniques can be taught and modeled but in the end, classroom management is an art that must be practiced and honed and is never fully mastered. What is important is being reflective and responsive to the needs of your class.

I think that this is where the challenge exists for many teachers, especially those of us who have transitioned from a corporate arena. Teaching in a career college takes some getting used to as well. Instructors have to take into consideration that in the career college environment, goals and final results are more focused on gainful employment. To be effective, therefore, an action plan has to go beyond traditional lesson planning.
This course was very helpful because it clarify the importance of the first day of class and thoroughly going over the syllabus. It also confirms my belief on how to treat difficult situations and how to deal with certain individuals.
I certainly agree that reflection is the path to improvement, whether after teaching a class, or after taking a class. In this case, I particularly appreciated the early comment about the first time you teach a class it is like being a test pilot. I am teaching two courses that I designed for the first time and I definitely am feeling it - particularly in one where I am trying out a "flipped classroom" model fully for the first time.
I also am going to work on my issue with names. I find them very difficult to remember - always… >>>
As an experienced instructor teaching a completely new subject to adults, I feel that keeping an open mind in the classroom is very important. I taught high school career and work experience to teenagers for the last thirteen years until recently when I accepted an offer to teach in a vocational school for adults. When I retired from public education I trained as a jeweler with an accredited school in my city. I have continued making jewelry, but now have to learn many of the new projects being taught and some of the same ones that I learned all… >>>

Nobody likes change, but in the medical world change is inevitable. Bringing real life examples into the classroom paints a vivid picture to all of the students of how fast things happen in the field. Following through with the rules helps students know we come to be their instructor and mentors not a friend. Practicing teach back during lectures and randoms quizes keeps them engaed and motivated to pay attention.
