Improving Delivery

One of the valuable concepts from this course that I believe will help my sudents complete homework is to highlight or put a box around the deadline. I give my students a printout of the online calendar, but the homework listed in the box can be overlooked as it is crowded by other objectives for the day. From now on, on the first day of the class I will have the students highlight or circle the exam and homework listings. This way it will stand out to them and help them to complete the assignment and to be prepared for… >>>

Classroom experiences

I have learned throughout my teaching experience that, adult learners are more set in their ways than children going through school for the first time. As an instructor, you have to use varied methods of teaching to be able to reach the different styles of learning that adults have. You have to earn respect by being respectful to your students. What you put forth is what you will get in return. Being open to their suggestions, taking the time to learn their ways of learning and being able to adapt to differences as well as learning styles. Letting your students… >>>

Lesson Plans

After going through the course, I have gained better knowledge of what should be included in lesson planning to better instruct students, as well as, help myself stay on track in the classroom, and going over material as i plan. I feel lesson plans also help instructors with the way they will run the class each day. The amount of information a student can take in and absorb is what they will retain in knowledge about the subject at hand.

Never Give up

Life itself is hard. You have to strive and do what is necessary to make it. Education is valuable. I learned this from experience. I instill this to my children. Make sure you have something behind your name that you can take anywhere you move. It is such great acomplishment to be able to walk into a good career.

Culinary Instructor

I teach in a kitchen which is very hands-on. There are so many oppurtunities to do fun activities or group exercises when you are around food. whether it is butchering a hog, making pasta or playing "the Price is Right" to demonstrate ingredient cost awareness, there are so many ways to approach the lessons in an interesting way. I got some great ideas for shaking things up in my class room. I liked the idea of bring in former students as guest speakers.

Classroom Disruption

I gained some pretty valuable information from this course! I also soon realized how much of a "disruption" that I created by reacting inappropiratley to adult students behavior. Staying focused and addressing the disruption or mis-management does not have to come with a heavy hand, yet staying professional.

Have fun

It is so hard to enjoy the class when you are so tired.

I am taking less classes to enjoy it as much as I did in the beginning 15 years ago.

Class Management Strategies

Although I have been teaching for a little over a year, this particular course gave me some new insights. I found it remarkable, all types of student behavioral characterisitics were addressed and as I was reading the material - the thought of "yes I have had this type of student" came to mind quite frequently. The advice on how to handle different students is very helpful and I am grateful for it.

My students tend to come up with excuses on why they could not attend class and failure rates are mostly related to attendance and subsequently missing exams. I… >>>

manageing class and students

This was motivating and inspiring. Will be a fun to pass that enthusiasm on to my students.

class management strategies

This online class was great i really enjoyed doing this class it was very imformative, I learn alot about how to deal with my students,

time starts now

I just finished the max knowledge a couple days ago and already I can see a difference in my work prioritizing of my to do list.  I am organizing my desk top differently according to what is most important to finish and it feels like I am getting more items finalized and completed.  I guess I was procrastinationg about finishing projects.   This has helped me alot.

Military students

During my time as an instructor for the Dept of Defense, I found that some of the lower ranking military personnel lacked interest or participation during training. I found that when time to break them up into groups for hands on demonstration and application, I placed them with some of their superior ranking personnel and that seemed to help them act accordingly and focus more on tasks at hand.

Angry Students

One of the techniques that was presented for angry students was to listen without interrupting, but to also take notes while the student is talking. I am going to try this. I find angry students to be the most difficult students to work with, especially if their expectations for resolution are not realistic. I also liked the suggestion about asking the student about their idea for a solution. It gives the chance for discussion about a solution that will work within the school's or department policies.

Handling Late Assignments

It is noted in one of the courses I teach, that no late homework is accepted. I have made exceptions in emergency situations, but the syllabus does not state that exceptions can be made. I would like to hear how other instructors handle late assignments.

Reflection

After completing this course, I am reflecting on areas that I can eliminate or reduce stress. I am an "immediacy" instructor. I am also fighting the urge to not constantly check my email or voicemail. I like the idea of having designating one or two times per day to deal with email. I also need to limit and communicate to my students when it is okay to contact me after hours or on weekends.

Stress Reduction

I would like to hear more real-world techniques for coping with stress.

Classroom Management

I believe that it is always important to work on improving your classroom management style.  No matter how long you have been teaching, you want to change things, stay fresh and be able to adjust your style for a particular group or classroom.  It was good being refreshed on classroom management styles here.

Time and Stress Management

I believe no matter what - everyone has stress.  The focus is not to get rid of it, because some stress has positive effects.  The goal is to minimize the stress to ensure it does not turn full circle and have negative effects.
