My School versus Your School

Compliance says that you are not to talk about other schools, negatively or otherwise. But how does that play out in real life? A prospective student came in this morning and was looking at one of our programs. He started talking about the fact that he is looking at other schools for the same type of program. I told him, "That's fine, I encourage you to check out all your options. You need to be able to make the right decision for your specific situation." I then continued with my presentation and answering their questions. He had his father with him. Part way through they asked a question about the other school. My comment was, "I don't know anything about that school. You would have to call or meet with them to find out." They pressed me a second time, at which point I said, " I apologize, but I really do not know anything about that school. You would have to check with them."

I can tell you that with me, it works in real life. I do not back down and actually encourage them to check out all their possibilities, if they start asking about other schools.

You did the right thing. It is not ethical to speak negatively about another school in anyway. For example, our school fees are lower than most schools around in our area. If a student asks of our other schools and their prices and as to why they are higher I can not negatively speak about the other schools. I respond in professional manner and refer to the school's mission goal and objectives and teach the student to choose a school based on what is best for them, looking at all aspects of the school. Certifcation passing rates, location, tuition, and et cetera

This is the correct response, you never want the student to hear you talking negatively about another program. Define the professional advantages of them attending your program, and encourage them to do their research and find out the best fit for them. We all believe that we have the best program, but it sometimes isnt the best fit for that student.

Good job on that!  We also have to keep in mind that people usually only give us their version of what transpired in their interaction with the other school.  They rarely divulge (or maybe see) their own failures in the interactions.  In other words not all bad press is deserved.  Some of it is but we gain nothing by joining the gripe.

I myself had a similar situation some time ago while working in admissions. It's okay to give factual information regarding another school however, it becomes non-compliant when you slander other institutions and discourage students against going to other schools. I agree with you, it's highly advisable and a much safer approcah for students to do their own research and obtain as much information as possible while researching other schools, this way they can make their own informed decisions as it relates to which school would be the best fit for them.
