Discussion: The Pros and Cons of Life-Changing Ideas

Discussion: The Pros and Cons of Life-Changing Ideas

Changing the world with new ideas doesn’t always bring positive outcomes, such as the addition of value to a product line, a business, or a society. When faced with innovative ideas, marketers must take into account both the potential positive and negative effects of putting those ideas into practice.

To prepare for this Discussion, review articles about self-driving cars such as those that are being developed by Google. Consider the positive and negative implications of introducing these vehicles into the market, focusing specifically on the possible social and economic impacts.

Post an evaluation of self-driving cars from a design perspective. Your evaluation should include the following:

  • A description of the positive and negative social and economic impacts of self-driving cars.
  • An analysis of the feasibility of introducing self-driving cars in the United States and in India, given the impacts you have identified. In other words, do the benefits of the product justify the means/impacts? Explain why or why not.

Are Five week classes long enough for students to get the basics?

Coming from a traditional school, I find it hard to teach as many of the basics students need. Maybe they do not need as much from one course. I teach Environmental Science and most of the time I skip the formulas, math and chemistry, just to get in the major concepts. For example, one week is global warming. Students poat to the discussion question and respond to two other students. This leaves out the hydrological cycle, nitrogen cycle, phosphorus cycle, chemical reactions, hazardous waste, not to mention the biological equations.

I seem to be teaching enough for them to be able to intelligently look for topics online. How do you get the basics in with such a short class?

Student Computer Compatiblity

I am interesting in learnng how much time other instructors spend dealing with student computer crashes and other system compatiblity issues.

Far too often I will get an e-mail from a student who is taking an online exam and that student will claim that the exam crashed.

It forces me to reset the exam often after a student has seen most of the questions.

How do others handle such situations?

Thanks,

Learning by teaching

I love the concept of learning by teaching. I teach composition and literature courses, and I discovered in my first semester of teaching composition that I learned more about writing in that process of teaching my own courses than I ever did in taking composition courses myself. This is why I have tried, in both on-ground and online courses, to make collaboration and peer review an essential and frequent tool for learning. When students are responsible, at least in part, for another's success, as well as their own, they seem to invest more and to internalize and actualize course content more readily. I would love to "hear" everyone's thoughts on learning by teaching!

Thank you!

Asynchronous vs. Synchronous tools

As an online instructor, do you feel that asynchronous, synchronous of a combination of these tool types, is most effective in the online classroom setting?

How to win a student that feels overwhelmed

I have a the biggest challenge of winning studets back after a long absence, how do I win them back?

Copyright Issues and the Classroom

The main issue in teaching art-based classes online is the lack of copyright free images to help hold lectures together and convey not only historical information, but also current styles and techniques. Based on the workshop I just attended only a small portion of an image may be used within a lecture and that usage is limited to a one-time occurrence. Any image prior to 1929 is fair game and may be used within a lecture. That help's when showing students great works of the past and to further vital historical information. The main issue occurs for all modern styles and techniques. It was suggested in the workshop that Clip Art may be used, however in an art class I would stay always from using bland and generic samples.  Besides, those techniques are not where I would encourage my students to move stylistically. I believe I will now start the process of reaching out to fellow artist who I know personally so help fill the missing gaps. With consented written permission, the images may and will be used for demonstrations.

Holistic Approach to Teaching

Hello,

Do you think the fast pace of online teaching enviroment allows you, the educators, for the holistic approach and evaluation of the learning process, other than the learning outcomes?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Group or Paired Work

There are powerful and great skills for student development. Additional skills discussed in regards to groups and pair work in the form of a project are . Collaboration, 2) compromise and 3) cooperation. There three concepts provide a wider application for students in the workplace.

Technology moving forward

Technology is moving at an astonishing pace. We no longer rely on the old or out dated technology such as dialing phones or dictionaries. We use to have rotary phones and our minds were sharper and could hold a multitude of numbers. Today the cell phones provide voice dialing were you don't need to recall any numbers just names. As for as spelling goes some of the new generation kids do not remember the spelling rules, they just depend on spell check and will not pick up a dictionary for the life of them. Technology is moving but we must also move with it and we have to mainly move from the basic; Yes, a fundamental foundation is still key…, the expansion…and then from there just try to keep up!!!!!

Mediation

Mediation can occur between computers and people in a learning context to demonstrate a multitude of processes. We use computer mediation to day to bridge the gap by use of audio tape, TV programs, phone calls, and radio. As fast as technology is growing we sometime need all the help we can get to minimize the gap between the on growing technical world and us, the people.

Logic Vs Effort

Logic is a discipline. Some A(s) are B(s) Some B(s) are A(s) therefore all A(s) are B(s) is by definition is illogical. It seems on occasion that teachers are using logic and effort interchangeably. A student can exert effort and should be rewarded, students can have opinions and should be rewarded for thinking about the course content, but they cannot have their own logic. When we grade the process holistically don't we run the risk of rewarding illogical thinking because he student puts forth effort?

Computers

Computers provide teacher and students with another tool for voicing there opinions and being heard as well as searching for information and knowledge.

Instructor Technical Knowledge

Instructor Technical Knowledge of computers and their systems is a key to online courses. I feel very secure instructing in a classroom because I can address any students questions or concerns. In the online course it is harder sometimes to do this. This is my first online course instructing and every day I find different ways to assist and utilize moodle.

Developing an Instructor/Student Working Relationship

In an online course it can be difficult in five weeks to develop an instructor/student working relationship. I have been very lucky to have a high number of military service members enrolled in my previous classroom and now online course. It gives me an opportunity in my Bio to address my military service and the students understand. In addition to having had a full time job; raised a family and worked on my degrees. I am also taking an online course at this time toward an MBA. They can read that we have similar stories and life experiences. Letting them know you are human and real builds on the relationship and trust.

Should have waited to start this course after the holidays

I have too many distractons now to do this. I will come back at a later date in January 015. Edward

Is there a possible web lexicon of media formats?

Is there a possible web lexicon of media formats? ie. graphics, audio, animation, and video formats and codecs, proper usage, and best methods for dissemination in online classes.

Inclusion in online chats

While in ground based classes, it is easier to see, identify and more importantly identify how NOT to approach the shy or insecure student. How is this issue addressed in the online chat session?

Technologies and outcomes

Have any studies been done comparing different technologies used in relations to different student outcomes?
