I enjoy trying to do some kind of online lab for some of the classes. We also have a live lab that has recent technology for the hands on portion of many of my classes. I commonly use powerpoints to help keep myself and the class on the same page and focused on the material being taught
When using powerpoints I always give the students handouts with the powerpoint slides listed with note taking areas. This helps to assist the different learning styles and helps to imprint the information given in addition to the basic powerpoint data.
If I need my students to use a specific software, I have them complete an online tutorial at Lynda.com.
My students love to see relevant industry related ideos, either dvd's or via the internet. Not only are they engaged in watching a video, but they are learning what to expect by watching real world experiences.
Lauren,
Students can usually tell when instructional materials are "standardized" or have been provided to the instructor. In my experience, students respond better when they feel that they are receiving an "authentic" learning experience. Adding your creativity in the supplemental PowerPoints, has provided your students with an enhanced experience.
Tremayne Simpson
I have used youtube videos that are relevant to course objectives, visual aids of real technology items, referred students to free learning sites like HP Learning, etc.
I have also found our standardized powerpoints to be rather boring. Since I am not allowed to change the standardized format, i took the time to build supplemental powerpoints filled with vibrant photos, charts, diagrams and important information. My students responded well to this extra information.
Utilize online videos, fill in the blank excel forms to complete problems, asking students to locate specific information related to an example that you want to use using their Iphone, computer or tablet and searching the internet.
Bernard,
Do you allow your students to use these devices (netbooks, computers, etc.) during lecture? If so, what guidelines do you set-forth to instill that they are not using the devices for non-class activities? This has become an increasingly difficulty topic (electronic devices in the classroom) for most instructors.
Tremayne Simpson
Thru the use of computers and even using net book to research information. They can also use computers to develop new formulas they may be working on.
I will let different students manage the progression of slides on the power point helping to insure they are following the stream of information.
Diane,
There are several software programs that can be used to record live action demonstrations, that can be used as "podcasts" for delivered course lectures. Many of our instructors use podcasts to deliver additional information, that is not discussed in their lectures.

I teach information technology and the best way that I've incorporated technology is through the creation of videos that include explanations, diagrams and even demonstrations. I try to factor in the various ways that students learn by using visual and audio.
I like to use over head projector some industry information on the internet also computers at every work station really helps with up to date tools .
I use YouTube videos a lot to drive home points. They are easily accessible and some are very well done. Students like hearing someone else's perspective from time to time and they are so used to using technology it energizes them.
TIMOTHY,
How did you students react to the animation concept that you introduced to them in the Physiology class?
Tremayne Simpson
I think the most inovative technology that I ever introducted was animation that I created after taking an introductory course at the local community college. I used it with a physiology class. It was a little more challanging than I anticipated (no academy awards) but I did it!
I routinely utilize power points with a remote presenter. I have on occasion gone to the internet for demonstrations (surgery, anatomy). Recently I discovered and used the Khan Academy for math!
Rochelle,
Do your students have to demonstrate application of the material, by performing "hands on" exercises with the audio equipment?
Tremayne Simpson
I teach audio engineering classes so the whole class is made up of technology. After a short lecture on sound forms, physics and any other related topics, I then have the students put my lecture into action
My courses integrate Powerpoint presentations, visual demonstrations, and in-class labs. I'm also looking into providing my own videos that summarize key points of the lecture. Hopefully in the near future!
