Judicious Review

I plan to use judicious review to help students better integrate what they are learning into their skill set overtime to prevent automatic deletion so that they can transfer the new content/skill into a service learning experience that will help the students to increase their confidence and decrease the risk of failure.

Linda,
Good plan to follow as this instills into the minds of the students the essential information while giving them opportunities to make application of the content in different settings.

I agree with the fact that judicial reviews are important for the reasons listed and it also helps as a tool for reviewing erroneous or missed information.

I think it is interesting that this course does not use a judicious review to prepare the students for exams. I feel that way to often we learn what to do as teachers but then we don't apply it to our own teaching. Interesting.

Joyce,
In your instructional planning how would you use a judicious review to enhance the learning process? What would be some strategies that would benefit the learning process?

In my practice of judicious review, I deliberately set up activities and discussions that will practice the teaching point over several class periods. Depending on what it is and how important it is, I bring the information to my students until they consistently demonstrate that they have processed it. I want them to be able to sing it. Using examples and explanations, guided practice and applications, I can usually achieve this.

I instruct first with Powerpoint for the tubehead proficiency and then have the students draw out the tube head on scratch paper at home. Then draw it out on the board next day at school to apply their knowledge.

Nicole,
This is a good way to use repetition as well as practice to enhance both knowledge and skill development. This helps the students to put the needed knowledge and skills into their long term memory bank.

I use review at the beginning of each class, then add on the new content, and at the next class that is concerened with both days classes,a new review to integrate the new with the old. It often combined with a hands on project to apply the knowledge

Carolyn,
This is how scaffolding works in learning. With this you not only build knowledge but you are also building confidence in their learning.
