Online Course Development
Developing online courses take a lot more time than in class courses. One main reason I see when doing both is I know the content in a face to face and have 4 hours to replay it in real time. This can be done at the same time with PowerPoint, lectures, and hand outs. In an online class this must all be converted to a digital format and shared which takes more time and planning.
Scott,
There are so many programs out there to help with the creating of lectures. Play with them all to see what is best for your class.

Hello Shelly,
I have successfully created several online courses and found it to be a very rewarding task. On the other hand, it is not easy and I have spent many hours reading the required text, researching and writing to ensure the content is specifically tailored for the course. However, I was not aware of specific programs to help create lectures. It is quite interesting that I really never thought about finding a program and just created my course lecture based on the text, resources, and knowledge I have acquired throughout my years of teaching. Thanks for the information.
All the best....
Naomi
Dr. Naomi,
Check out panopto or captiva? Both have some good uses for the online arena.

As I am and have been involved in course development and instructional design, I think it is fair to reason that it is perhaps more challenging to construct materials that are sufficiently stimulating to students in the online environment, if but for two key reasons: 1) body-language can often be as important an element in effective communication as verbal language, and of course, that is missing in the online environment; and 2) an instructor can get immediate response feedback from students in a ground class, both from their body language reactions to instructor stimuli, as well as stated responses, i.e. questions, statements adding value to course concepts, etc. and, to some degree, at least the former is missing in the online environment.
Dr. Sidney,
Good point. Body language says a lot in the classroom. Is a student asking a question because they are tired and simply do not want to look for an answer or are they really confused?

I'm an online instructor and I think that it's time management when it comes to developing a online course. Before I start fully teaching my online course I alwas ask how many students have every taken an online course before. This allows me to set the speed for the course. Do believe in making sure that I have all of my files that I want to share with the class within a readable format.
Breezy,
Good point!! We teach our students time management when it comes to doing assignments....developing a class is also a good example of time management!

Hi Shelly,
I have very little experience in course development. I've been given a task to develop and online course. What are some programs that can are user friendly as it pertains to course development?
Veronica,
Depends on your Learning Management System (Blackboard, OnCourse, Moodle ect). I highly recommend you start with your textbook! Yes, most textbooks will come with a great deal of resources that you can use. Then you can try your hand at PowerPoint.....in PowerPoint you can add verbal instructions to your presentation.
