As indicated in other responses, the schools I work for do not allow a modification to the syllabus therefore adding a blog would give the students an added ungraded element, which will likely not be done. In one school we have weekly classes that are not graded, but are a fantastic way of getting great insights about the work and assignments for the week, but since there is no grade involved it is rare that I have more than 1 or 2 people show up. :-(

Depending on the school you work for, this is not always an option Dr. Kelly. I am what is called a FT adjunct, as I cannot find one FT job so I have 3 PT ones and in two of those three I am REQUIRED to give my phone number and be available to students within 24 hours of their call. While this sounds like a good idea in theory, we are not teaching the student to use the numerous resources that the schools provide. In the one school where I am not required to give out my personal info… >>>

While I appreciate the information contained within these courses, much of the work does not pertain to for-profit schools as we are given the platform and have specific guidelines and syllabi we follow in the classroom. As well, there is no qualifications required for entry, so computer or not - computer literate or not, everyone has the opportunity to enter our schools. While this is an amazing opportunity for many, there are times that a student comes in thinking they can do all the work on their smart-phone and that can lead to challenges. When I was a Dean this… >>>

I agree, as well many do not realize they are "surfing the net" or watching television for more hours than they think they are. Writing down all activities that take one hour or more is a huge eye opener for most students Dr. Kelly....I know it was for me! :-)

Aside from first term, I also teach Algebra online. I found that I was sharing a number of concepts over and over, so I created a webpage that contained a number of downloadable "cheat sheets" which has worked well. I am not sure a blog would be advantageous in a math class, as it is important to have all the elements in one place. I am also unclear as to why we would want to promote students "participating" in a location that will not add to their grade and give us additional work. In my minds eye I could already… >>>

Hi All! While I understand the need to utilize social media, as it is prevalent in our society, with first term students there is so much on their plate. Not only are they learning a new LMS (and sometimes how to use a computer), but learning to create a time management system, getting the balance of work, home and school as well as the numerous resources the schools provide these days - I think adding social media may be overwhelming. I also believe that as an adjunct, it is very hard to dedicate that much additional time to keep personal… >>>

I appreciate that this section shared that a number of online learners are not comfortable using technology. I recall when I first found out that I had students who "never had a computer" and those who never used the internet or Microsoft products I was stunned, however over the years have come to realize this is something that will continue to happen over and over. In my first term class I teach one class a week, which allows me to review the concept for a large portion of the time we share and use the last 20-30 minutes for assignment… >>>

I teach first term students who may or may not, have ever attended college. Some have minimal computer skills, which means added stress learning their way around the classroom while also trying to figure out how to create a document, save and upload it. All this leads to a great deal more time in the classroom and working on assignments than they originally thought. In my first week I share with them the different types of time management tools. I share with them that if they have never used a time management plan, beginning with a calendar is the best… >>>

I agree Dr Johnson! Maybe it is just human nature to know our voice counts, but not put it forth unless told we cannot...?
No Ma'am, but I keep hoping... :-)
