I hadn't considered deliberately examining your personality as it relates to your teaching style and then crossing that with how you interact with the class / students. A good thing to consider. Also, the part about being confident in front of the class and owning that you are the SME really resonated with me -- students can smell fear! :D
I wish I had learned the bit about preparing guest speakers before last semester -- I wasn't sure how to direct them and several of them did just come & ramble the whole time - I definitely heard about it on my student course evaluations! Yikes!
Knowing oneself, being prepared ahead of time and taking a pause are all credibility builders.
I like the rubirc of teacher types presented at the beginnig of this module. I have to think a bit about where I stand, but somewhere between Drill Sargeant and Zen-type. It is always difficult to be in front of the student and to recognize my own teaching style and reflect on how I can change/modify it to meet the needs of such a diverse set of students.
Learn more about myself and my students. Being prepared, organized and ready to start class on time.
Setting aside the time to grab all material and get your class in order before the students even enter the classroom or Lab is key to demonstrating what you expect from the student and also setting up how the student sees you.
Setting the "tone' for the student experice is key. Being prepared, organied, ready and prepared for class is vital. Being on time and setting the example for students is also key. Most of us lead by example and positive examples promote positive student outcomes.
I like the idea of using different colored handouts to draw attention to the information and making it more interesting.
Class preparation is going to be one of the keys to being a successful instructor. Try to tap into my teaching style and work on my weaknesses white utilizing my strengths.
I learned that you should be prepared for class before class. Having everything you need for the class ready for the students is very important.
Identity in teaching style
Observation of other instructors helps you recognize what "works" for students (Perspective)
I personally was able to obtain some small changes (color handouts) easier reference and identify if we are all on the "same page"
Love this idea
Planning and Preperation can be observed by student as Respect.
After reading these lessons, I find that I need to make some adjustments to become a more effective class manager.
I learned that I need to focus not only on my personality but how other's perceive my personality in my teachings.
I agree with taking a pause during and after lecture, it will give you inside and will allow you to adjust if you need to. Make class fun!! Student will enjoy the material and it will be a win win situation for you and the student.
