Working through experience

Training is ineffective unless the desired behavior, knowledge and skills are transferred to the workplace. Applying what you’ve learned from your training will help you maximize your performance results.

I often explain to my students the value of learning while on the job.  As a dental hygienist, my experience has taught me that I can't do the job alone, but depend on my fellow coworkers to help achieve a satisfactory day! And in turn, I help them with their duties so that we show our patients/employees that we are a cohesive unit and can work through whatever is thrown at… >>>

Good Course.

One of the better ones I've taken, I really did learn a lot. That being said, there was an annoying error in the pre-tests. It seems to m,e there are 2 possible correct answers, based on the text, but one of them came back as negative (the one specifically listed in the answer!)

feedback

I learned that you always want to compliment an employee before giving negative feedback, never unload all of the negatives on a person.

Good Refresher

Although the tutorial is fairly basic, since we often tend to operate on auto-pilot, it serves as a good reminder of the importance of effective communication and the need to be very deliberate in our communications.

I am Learning

This course provide many avenues and techniques to communicate base on different situations.

Active listening takes practice

Active listening is a some times hard to do in a very busy lab. However active listening is a necessary skill to apply.

Active listning

I plan on making sure I understand what I've heard by asking questions and summorizing concepts.

The Importance of Listening

This tutorial taught me some techniques for active listening. I am currently reading a book entitled "Listen to Succeed - How to identify and overcome barriers to effective listening". Effective listening ensures that communication is a two-way transaction. Listening is one of the most important interpersonal and business skills.

Emotionally charged situations make it difficult at times to listen. During these times, effective listening is even more important. According to Chapter Three in the above-entitled text, barriers to effective listening include: Emotional triggers; performance anxiety; hit-or-miss listening; language; lack of focus; judging and weighing; and power and control.

Let's learn to Listen Better and Better

In the module, this –Henry David Thoreau quote was shared:

The greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I thought, and attended to my answer."

I loved it because it is a reminder to us to listen and then "attend" to what we hear.

We release judgement and bias - stay open with reasoned skepticism and wisdom, but can we really just "be" - can we really learn how to relax and fully attend to what someone is saying?

I know this can be hard for us at times- when the business day… >>>

My Reflection and Action Plan

My action plan includes four areas:

1. Classroom Environment- My plan is to make sure that I create an optimal language envrionment for my ELL students. I will make sure that student feels comfortable and that he or she has a classroom buddy. I teach college level so I will make sure that I use more cooperative learning activities so my ELL students are exposed to using the language more.

2. Assignments- I will make sure that I modify my assigments for the ELL learners and that I explain directions and ensure that students have understood'
