I read that after death the records are no longer protected but this seems a violation of privacy whether the person is dead or alive
Enlightening to learn that despite an academic institution's decision regarding an individual filing a complaint to address a discrepancy in their student academic record, that per FERPA the person has a right to submit a statement refuting the institution's decision which must be disclosed with any future records request. Good to know since I may need to resort to this in the near future if my official transcript from graduate school is not appropriately corrected after my next formal request.
Is a clear example of how staff members act as students, having a clear point where information can be accessed and why parts
Always follow policy when dealing with FERPA and if you have any questions, ask before giving any information.
It’s true, many people, me included, tend to forget that FERPA not only relates to maintaining student records private. But it also gives students the right to access and request their educational records. Students may still view their records even if they have an overdue balance.
Training is important for employees to understand FERPA regulations. Having protocols in place and making sure employees understand these protocols are important.
It is necessary to have the training to understand how extensive the protections afforded by FERPA are. If this training were provided in all institutions, there may be a better respect for student privacy.
This content was very helpful in understanding and learning various aspects of FERPA and one cannot have access to its own records without following proper communication channel is something very important point to keep in mind.
Make sense like HIPAA that you can't look at your own information like grades if you are an employee.
Best Practices are in place to protect students, maintain integrity of the information.
After a final decision, the student can include a statement in his/her permanent academic record conveying a differing opinion.
I really didn't realize all of the different facets of FERPA responsibilities and practices.
From this module, I have learned the importance of knowing that although students have the right to access their academic information under FERPA, they must follow the appropriate process and procedures.
This module showed me how FERPA is important to students' access to their own records. This has allowed me to become familiar with their rights in that regard, which is vital to students maintaining their autonomy and privacy.
It was interesting to read more about best practices! The question about a former president sparked my thinking. Strange how a student death can lead to inactive FERPA rights.
I appreciate FERPA and the degree of protection of student's educational records as it compares to HIPPA and patient's medical records.
keeping records confidential is very important for integrity. written consents should be made well understood at enrollment to the school.
